Hair Pieces
Patients with patchy hair loss may prefer the partial coverage of hair pieces or the addition of volume with hair extensions, which are usually made from animal hair such as horse, sheep, or yak hair. Hair extensions are strands of synthetic or human hair that are attached to existing hair fibers by means of glue, braids, sewing, or clips.
Hairpieces are the most popular method of hair replacement, but the cost and appearance of any given hairpiece varies widely based on the materials used and the level of craftsmanship in their creation.
Wigs may be worn or fitted to replace hair lost through illness or accident, or to create just about any other fashion, style of new look. Due to technology developments and options available, hair extensions and wigs may now be worn to give a natural look that looks like the wearer’s own hair. Even premium synthetic fibres that have the appearance of natural hair are available, as well as human hair products. Generally, human hair products are constructed in a variety of ways and typically include different cap constructions, capless designs, ‘mono-top’ wigs or hair pieces, toupees and weaves.
In addition to full wigs, toupees and other artificial hair pieces, hair extensions provide a method of adding hair to existing natural hair to conceal thinning or to give a look of longer thicker hair. Hair extensions are usually either (or a combination of) woven, fused, bonded or clipped into the wearer’s natural hair to provide updated or new looks without wearing a full capped wig or permanently changing the existing hair. Clip-in hair extensions may be fitted by a hair salon or wig provider and involve clipping sections of either natural or synthetic hair into the wearer’s own hair with small toupee clips. Clip-in hair extensions may be worn day and night but must be removed before sleeping.
